"The World is Quiet Here."

Sometimes I hate politics.

Today is one of those days. Between the Senate Republicans blocking student loan rate freezes and North Carolina passing Amendment One, I am sad for our country. Why are we making students, who are already struggling financially, pay down the national debt instead of professional service firms ? And why do we feel it’s okay to vote against two consensual people of the same sex having all of the same rights as two consensual people of opposite sexes? Not to mention the fact that Amendment One threatens domestic partnership protections for all couples, not just same-sex couples, making it harder to fight against domestic abuse.

Ugh. People.

Macon Phillips, of the Executive Office of the President, tweets this striking image of President Obama seated in the bus where Rosa Parks initiated her quest for civil rights.

Amazing pic. (EDIT: It’s worth noting the bus is currently in the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. Thanks Margarita Noriega!)

Clearly, the photo of the day.

I like this a lot.

"In my dream I was at a Political Convention of Hillary Clinton. I was also Batman and Hillary was my lover. I was demasked as well but then Hillary had stopped time so no one would know my secret identity. And then Bill Clinton was crying but it was unrelated to Batman/me being his wife’s lover." — Beryl Clark

Anonymous whispered, "when you say liberal, how liberal are you?"

Well, Anon, this is a good question. I’ve only ever lived in extremely conservative communities, so by those standards, I am extremely liberal. But I think that overall, I’m fairly moderate. I’ll let you decide for yourself.

In matters of policy, I’m against the death penalty, I do support gay marriage, and I don’t think the trickle-down theory works in economics. I am pro gun control, I support stem-cell research, and I believe that the rich should be taxed to a much greater degree than the working class. For example, I don’t think it’s fair for one who earns $7.50/hr to work for six hours, earning $45, only to have 30% (almost $15) of that taken away. That person then ends up working 6 hours for just about $30. Not cool. That $15 is a lot more meaningful to them than it is to the government, in my opinion.

I’m fine with drilling for oil in the US (under EPA restrictions), but think it’s more important to find alternative fuel sources so that we don’t need to be dependent on a limited fuel supply. I take the middle ground on abortion, believing it should be allowed in cases of rape, incest, or where the mother’s life is in danger, but am hesitant to support laws in either direction on the subject. I also support socialized health care because I think it is important for everyone to have open access to health care regardless of affordability.

Finally, I am a proud supporter of the Oxford Comma.  I don’t suppose that’s a matter of political opinion, but I do use the comma liberally.

Anyway, that’s where I stand on most subjects, Anon. Let me know under your own URL if you have any further questions, and I’m happy to answer privately. I love having political discussions with open-minded people, and I am willing to listen to your views as long as you are willing to listen to mine. :)
