Municipal elections may not seem that important on the surface, but it is the City and County Councils and the District School Boards where good policy takes root. We have brought on a dedicated intern, formerly an “Obama for America” grassroots organizer, to create and execute our field plan, and with your help we are poised to see the most significant impact we have ever seen in our state.”

Dear Eagles and Friends,

Tomorrow Senator Stuart Reid and myself will be speaking at the monthly Liberty Forum Meting, at 10:00 A. M., held at the Provo Library. This is a very important meeting, we will be sharing information about the anti-discrimination bills that were introduced at the legislature during this last session. One of these bill passed out of committee and was sent to the full senate for consideration. Fortunately, it was late in the session and the bill never made it to the floor of the senate for a vote. As I read this bill I was more than shocked. We have had anti-discrimination bills before and we have always worked hard to defeat these bills. In the past the bills have been sponsored by democrats with a clear radical homosexual agenda.

This time the anti-discrimination bill was sponsored by Republican Senator Steve Urquhart and part of this horrible bill included transgender language that said if a person self-identified as a member of the opposite sex that their employer would have to accept this and allow them to use the bathroom that they identified with, using language like, “consistent and uniform assertion of the gender identity” or “sincerely held” belief. The law reads, ” It is a discriminatory and prohibited employment practice to deny an employee access to restrooms, shower facilities, or dressing facilities that are consistent with the employee’s gender identity.” i.e. If a man who thinks he is a woman declares that position to his employer, then his employer would be required to let him use the women’s bathroom. If the business has a workout facility then, according to the bill, the man would be allowed to shower and dress with the women and there is nothing that anyone could do about it. Two Republicans on the committee joined with the Democrats and voted for it, which was why it passed the committee.

If this bill were to become law it could lead to the end of Utah’s constitutional amendment that protects traditional marriage by stating the marriage is just between a man and a woman. We will be talking about what we must do to protect our rights to live in a moral society and to rear our children accordingly. We are so close to losing this battle, People seemed to have given up or just don’t care any more.

I CARE, I CARE A LOT AND WE NEED YOU TO CARE. Please come to this meeting and find out what you can do to help before it is too late. Talk to your friends and neighbors invite them to come with you. If you live in Salt Lake drive down to Provo, it really doesn’t take that long. During the legislative session I drive every day from Utah County to the Capitol, sometimes in the snow. I do that because if we are involved we can make a difference. We need you now to help us make a difference on this issue. By the way, it is takes the same amount of time to drive from Utah County to Salt Lake as it does to drive from Salt Lake to Utah County.

Senator Uruquart said he will bring this bill back in the next legislative session and he feels confident he can pass it. That confidence came from the republican support.

Sometime in the next 2 weeks the decision should come from the Supreme Court on Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act. We will also discuss what this could mean in Utah.

I applied for and was recently notified that I received the Gender Studies Departmental Scholarship at the University of Utah for the 2013-2014 Academic Year. It is a full-tuition scholarship and they only give it to one student in the program. I am so excited.
I was offered a paid internship for the summer with a new grassroots non-profit organization called Utah Votes. We’re brand new, starting from scratch, and I get to be a part of it. They are implementing grassroots techniques to elect progressive candidates in Utah and promote progressive causes. And, if it’s successful, it will be something that is really exciting to have been a part of.
Finally, today I was offered a position with Equality Utah, an organization “working for a fair and just Utah” around issues of LGBTQ* Equality. They are my favorite LGBTQ* Equality organization that I have ever found. They are level-headed, practical, have achievable goals, and do not marginalize any of the LGBTQ* Community. I get to work with them to help in the interview process for political candidates to determine whether or not we will be endorsing specific candidates. My interview with them was amazing. I have never felt so good about an interview in my life. Today they officially called me and offered me the position and said that since I am so qualified, they are going to speak to the board of directors to see if they can offer me more money than they were originally planning to offer me. It is a really good feeling.

I’m really glad I decided not to take classes this summer. It’s going to be busy, but [hopefully] it’s going to be amazing. Tomorrow is my first big event with Utah Votes, and my boss is out of town so I’m running it myself. It feels kind of sloppy, but I mean we’re starting from scratch and I’m good at what I do. These next couple of days might be a little crazy, but it will give me a foundation I need to get started and the tools I need to [hopefully] implement a good self-sustaining program for when I am done with the organization. It’s an exciting opportunity, albeit stressful, but by the end of this week I will be feeling much better about life.

It’s good to be involved in the political world again. I kind of missed it. But it’s also super stressful.

At least my life seems to be headed in a good direction. [: I’m so lucky to find jobs that I love around issues that I’m passionate about. Looks like it’s going to be a good summer. [:
